Rubicon Bakers makes all-natural cakes, cupcakes, cookies and muffins. With a product line of more than 50 SKUs available in 2,500 retail locations nationwide, Rubicon Bakers is working every day to “Bake a Better World.”
Rubicon Bakers, a portfolio company of Trive Capital, recently acquired Just Desserts, Fairfield, Calif. Both companies manufacture high-quality desserts and sweet goods, making the acquisition a natural fit.
The acquisition marks Rubicon Bakers’ leap into operating more than one facility, which will allow the company to better serve customers in the specialty and mainstream grocery market.
“We are excited to add the Just Desserts brand and products to our portfolio,” said Leslie Crary and Andrew Stoloff, the founders of Rubicon Bakers, based in Richmond, Calif. “Just Desserts and Rubicon share in the focus and passion to deliver high-quality and innovative products, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to scale our footprint to a multi-facility platform so that we can continue to serve customers nationwide. Additionally, the combination with Just Desserts, located just down the road from us, provides exciting career opportunities and flexibility for our employees as the business grows.”
When Andrew Stolof and wife Leslie Crary bought Rubicon Bakers in the fall 2009, the wholesale bakery had just 14 part-time employees. Previously, Stolof had owned restaurants and originally was brought in to try to sell the business. Instead, he fell in love. “I looked at the financials, and it was pretty clear what they were spending on labor and ingredients was too high,” says Stolof, who holds an MBA in finance from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. “At the time, I fell in love with the mission and how the bakery had touched people’s lives.”
From its inception, Rubicon Bakers, based in Richmond, California, has been committed to turning the lives of their workers around with every cake, cupcake, cookie and muffin they bake. Founded in 1993, the company helps rebuild lives by employing, training and supporting people who need a second chance in life.
