New York City-based Levain Bakery is introducing a vegan and gluten-free version of its classic Chocolate Chip Walnut cookie.

Bakery founders Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald spent years experimenting with different recipes, and for the first time in 28 years, have finally offered a version of the bakery’s most popular item so that more people can enjoy the treat.

The cookie features chunks of crunchy walnuts, semisweet vegan chocolate chips and is made with plant-based rich and creamy butter made from cashews.

“As one of our core values is “welcome all,” we want to invite everyone into our bakeries for a treat,” says Weekes and McDonald. “With this new cookie, we’re making good on that vision for those who follow a vegan and gluten-free lifestyle. Next time you visit our bakery, we’re proud to offer you this delicious option.”

The cookie ($6) is available in all Levain Bakery retail locations starting Monday, March 6 and is available for nationwide shipping online.

Founded in 1995 as a small bread shop on the Upper West Side of New York City, the bakery has become a renowned destination. It now has eleven locations across New York, Washington, DC, Boston and Chicago, with an additional location opening this spring in Los Angeles.
