In Alameda, California, a dynamic duo is helping its community through desserts. Superhero Desserts, a newly-opened bakery from married couple Edwina and Mike Phillips, uses its sweet treats to raise money to help those in need.

These superheroes feed the homeless, teach free self-defense seminars, provide safety patrols, clean up used needles, and more. A portion of Superhero Desserts’ proceeds are used for homeless outreach events.

Eight years ago, the Phillips’ founded the San Francisco chapter of The Initiative, a worldwide organization that performs good deeds. They are members of the Real Life Superhero community who wear superhero costumes and perform outreach under superhero names.

In order to fund their outreach effort, the Edwina and Mike started baking and selling desserts under the name Superhero Desserts. It first started as a pop-up, but soon grew to its new brick-and-mortar location where Edwina is the Head Baker and Mike is the Assistant Baker.

The menu at Superhero Desserts includes a Guinness Stout Bundt cake, a lemon poppyseed drizzle cake, dark chocolate zucchini bread, and chocolate salted caramel cupcakes, among many other items.
