This week, we're looking at Moonwood Coffee, Bakery, & Catering in Huntington Beach, California. Moonwood has successfully built a name for itself in Orange County for its excellent catering services, delicious coffee and baked goods, and commitment to bettering the community. Co-owners Alecia Draper and Bernadette Neace share over 50 years of baking industry experience between them, which they've used to train a team committed to high-quality craftsmanship and delivering the best catering service.

How many years have you been in business?

Moonwood: Moonwood Coffee Co. has been in business since 2014. Our co-owners Alecia & Berne acquired the catering company in 2017 - expanding it into a thriving bakery, coffee, & catering business.

What made you want to get into the baking industry, and why are you passionate about baking?  

The allure of the baking industry captivated us with its potential for something truly distinctive. We were drawn to the idea of translating the coffee and bakery experience into something that reaches you directly, igniting a spark of joy at your doorstep. Our co-owners, Alecia Draper and Bernadette Neace, carry a combined legacy of over 50 years in the baking realm, a testament to their profound connection with the craft. The driving force behind our journey stems from our desire to cultivate a community rooted in mutual support, where growth is nurtured and life's significant moments are celebrated. The passion for baking embodies our commitment to infuse comfort and solace through the simple pleasure of a well-crafted cup of coffee and the artistry of baked goods precisely when they're needed the most.

What are your top-selling products, and what product do you consider to be your specialty? 

Top-selling products: Full Moon Coffee, Cedar Cinnamon Latte, Cinnamon Rolls, Banana Bread, Hand Dipped & Decorated Sugar Cookies.

Our Specialties: Affogato (beverage specialty) and Moonwood Mini Desserts (desserts specialty).  

What do you see trending in the industry?

We see a few things trending from Mobile Coffee Catering to the latest obsessions in baked goods, there's an enjoyable focus on miniature dessert delights of mini donuts, mini bars, and mini cookies.

How has your RBA membership made a difference in your business?

We have been able to find great resources and connections with other baking industry owners and manufacturers.

What have you learned from customers over the years?

Customers love premium craft coffee selections on the menu and pastries that are made from scratch in small batches

What are your plans for the bakery in the coming years (expansion, digital, new offerings, etc.)?

Our plans are to expand by opening additional locations in Orange County, California mobile trailer or retail locations, as well as expand our menu to offer savory items.

What do you look for when hiring staff?

We look for proactive responsible individuals who have work experience, a work ethic, and a passion for the art of baking and the coffee industry craftsmanship.

What would you have done differently in starting your business/what do you wish you could tell your past self when starting your business?

We would emphasize how important foot traffic, street visibility, and accessibility would be in our retail locations.
