A recent survey commissioned by the National Coffee Association has found that the number of Americans drinking a cup of coffee per day is the highest level in six years. 3,000 individuals surveyed about their coffee habits revealed that 64 percent of Americans drink a cup of coffee every day.

Research from Mintel reveals the U.S. coffee house market continues to experience healthy growth with sales reaching an estimated $23.4 billion in 2017, a growth of 41 percent from 2011. Those sales are expected to reach $28.7 billion by 2021.

Coffee is a blossoming beverage opportunity for retailers, especially bakeries. They are competing with cafes and other retailers looking to bring in more customers with more distinctive beverage offerings. Bakeries can offer a welcoming experience, as well as hot beverages that consumers can’t make at home, such as “evolved coffees” and very frothy coffee drinks.

The average American spends over $1,000 annually on coffee, so retailers are wise to find ways to appeal to the coffee-seeking crowd.
