The daughter of a Village Bakery employee shows off Mohter's Day hat cakes.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 9, and bakeries around the country are celebrating this spring holiday:

Ruth and Beth Stoltzfus, the mother-daughter owners of the Village Bakery and Café in Chestertown, MD, are honoring the mothers in their community with special cakes designed to look like hats, featured at left, as well as with a brunch on Sunday, May 9, where mothers will receive a free mimosa.

The pastry chefs at Florida’s PAUL Bakery & Restaurant have created a special cake for Mother’s Day. The Framboisier has delicate layers of vanilla sponge, vanilla mousseline and fresh raspberries, coated with a thin, smooth almond paste and decorated with fresh raspberries.

The Grand Central Bakery, with locations in both Portland, OR and Seattle, WA, is celebrating Mother’s Day with coconut cakes (featured at right), tulip- and daisy-shaped cookies, fruit coffee cakes and strawberry rhubarb pies. The bakery is also giving back this holiday, donating 5 percent of Mother’s Day sales to a local non-profit dedicated to helping homeless and low-income mothers and their families.

The Liliha Bakery in Honolulu, HI will feature on its Mother's Day menu ornately decorated butter cake hearts, both in small and large varieties. Liliha is also offering a cupcake special, featuring packages of six bright, flower-topped cupcakes.

Mother’s Day is not going unnoticed in Colorado, either. Maggie and Molly’s Bakery in Denver is selling a dozen buttery sugar cookies made especially for moms. Customers can mix and match pretty dresses, flower pots, hearts and signature message cookies. Each cookie is hand-decorated with brightly shaded royal icing.
