FDA Deputy Commissioner

Stephen Ostroff, M.D., the Food and Drug Administration’s deputy commissioner for Foods and Veterinary Medicine, will be the keynote speaker at the 2016 North American Millers’ Association’s annual meeting set for Sept. 9 at the Salamander Resort & Spa in Middleburg, Va.

Dr. Ostroff will be discussing the F.D.A.’s priorities and activities, including the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (F.S.M.A.) and food safety issues affecting the milling industry. Dr. Ostroff also will review the new nutrition labeling requirements, biotechnology, child nutrition programs and other issues of interest to the food industry.

In his role at the F.D.A., Dr. Ostroff oversees the food and animal health activities of the agency, including the F.D.A.’s responsibilities in the areas of food safety and nutrition, food labeling, food and color additives, cosmetics, dietary supplements, animal drugs and animal feed, and research to support the food and veterinary medicine mission of the F.D.A. He also provides leadership and direction to the F.D.A.’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and the foods-related programs of the F.D.A.’s inspection and compliance arm, the Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA). His responsibilities include leading the implementation of the F.D.A. Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011.

Earlier, Dr. Ostroff was the acting commissioner of the F.D.A., serving from April 2015 to late February 2016. Before being named acting commissioner, Dr. Ostroff was the F.D.A.’s chief scientist since February 2014. He joined the F.D.A. in 2013 as chief medical officer in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and was a senior public health adviser to the F.D.A.’s Office of Foods and Veterinary Medicine.
