Cannistraros Bakery

Renovations are underway at 105 Northside Plaza in Elkton, NJ, to transform the former restaurant into Cannistraro’s Café & Bakery, according to a report in the Newark (NJ) Post.

Mary Cannistraro and her family have been working inside for the last few weeks, adding kitchen equipment, removing half-walls in the dining room to open up the eating area, and adding a bar/counter with chairs.

If plans come together, the business is expected to open on Oct. 11.

Cannistraro said she’s grown up in the restaurant business since age 14, helping her mother at Howard Johnson’s in Newark.

Her first venture on her own was in the late 1990s.

She leased space in Chesapeake City from Allaire duPont from 1997 to 2000 to operate the Bohemia Café and she’s baked cakes for private customers for years.

“I love to cook,” Cannistraro said.

She plans to prepare muffins, scones, pastries, pies, cakes, cookies, bread and rolls on the premises fresh daily.

The café menu features breakfast, lunch and dinner items. She plans to open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily and will offer take-out, eat-in or catering services.
