National Blueberry Pie Day

National Blueberry Pie Day is celebrated annually on April 28th, and Driscoll's, grower of only the finest berries, is making sure pie lovers have access to everything they need to make this day memorable. From pie tips offered by the nation's leading bakers to contests and coupons, Driscoll's will ensure an unforgettable experience.

On April 27th from 7 PM - 8 PM, acclaimed cookbook author and Bon Appetit contributing editor Dede Wilson will host a live chat on the Driscoll's Facebook page. Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in a contest where five lucky winners will receive a Wilton pie pan, a copy of Ms. Wilson's Unforgettable Desserts and Driscoll's coupons.

Blueberries are one of the few fruits native to North America. In 1916, Elizabeth Coleman White, the daughter of a New Jersey farmer, developed the first commercial variety of blueberry based on the wild varieties growing in the region. Today, Driscoll's blueberries are grown year-round by farmers in the U.S., including New Jersey, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, Washington and Central California and as well as expansion into Mexico, Argentina and Chile. With the warm weather ahead the sweetest season in the U.S. for blueberries is approaching.

Small but mighty, blueberries have the highest antioxidant capacity of all fresh fruits and vegetables. "With flavors ranging from sweet to tart and coloring that spans blue to purple-black, blueberries are the sapphires of fruit," says Frances Dillard, Director of Marketing for Driscoll's. "They're good for your heart, your vision, and they may protect against some cancers."

According to Ms. Wilson, "One of my favorite ways to enjoy blueberries, besides in their natural state, is in dessert. Ripe blueberries, combined with the other ingredients such as natural sugar and organic butter, makes a rich and satisfying final product. As we all know, blueberry pie is an American favorite, and it was this pie that gave me inspiration for my recipe Blueberry Creme Fraiche with Poppy Seed Crust featured in my latest dessert cook book."

For consumers who can't get enough of their beloved blueberry, Driscoll's website is a rich resource of berry recipes for every occasion and every day. The recipe library is also full of cooking tips, nutrition information and serving suggestions.
