Southern California’s acclaimed doughnut shop, Sidecar Doughnuts, has been running a “celebrity chef” series throughout the year in celebration of its fifth anniversary. As part of the series, chefs create new doughnut flavors that will each be featured for a month. Proceeds from their sales go to each chef's nonprofit of choice.

This month’s special doughnut comes from celebrity chef Richard Blais. He has created a Banana Split Doughnut, with a portion of its proceeds going to Traveling Stories. This San Diego nonprofit provides literacy resources and money management skills to children.

The Banana Split Doughnut consists of a banana chocolate chip cake doughnut topped with a strawberry-banana glaze, roasted peanuts, chocolate sauce, and a dried strawberry. It’s a gluten-free flavor that will be available at multiple locations including Sidecar’s pop-up shop at The Crack Shack Encinitas on Sunday, August 26.

One of Sidecar’s most famous offerings is its Basil Eggs Benedict doughnut. This malasada-style doughnut is stuffed with ham and a pre-poached egg. It is then fried and finished with a piping of basil Hollandaise sauce inside.
