Most people could guess what makes Pittsburgh bakery Prohibition Pastries famous, simply based on its name. That doesn’t make its flavors any less surprising.

The shop opened almost a year ago in the city’s Point Breeze neighborhood and has since built a reputation with alcohol-infused goods such as pies, cakes, cookies, and bread. Prohibition Pastries has partnered with Pennsylvania companies like East End Brewing Company, Wigle Whiskey, Bluecoat American Dry Gin, Maggie’s Farm Rum, and Glades Pike Winery for these products.

Owner Eliza Bowman was inspired by her time studying theater in New York where she developed an appreciation of craft beers and spirits. “It’s the best of both worlds,” Bowman says of her products. “I’m incredibly Irish and most of my great-grandma’s recipes included a half a cup of whiskey.”

Among the many alcohol-infused items available at Prohibition Pastries are pecan-topped sticky buns, quiches, sandwiches,  burnt sugar cake, and hand pies made with bacon, egg, and beer cheese. Bowman and her staff love to create new boozy products that satisfy their customers.
