This year, Americans are expected spend a record $5.9 billion to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. According to the National Retail Federation, this total would top last year’s previous record of $5.3 billion.

Among those surveyed by the NRF, 50% will spend money on food, 41% will spend money on beverages, and 16% will spend money on candy. 149 million U.S. adults plan to celebrate the March 17 Irish holiday, with these consumers expected to spend an average of $39.65 per person.

“With winter hopefully winding down over the next few weeks, consumers are ready to start celebrating spring with St. Patrick’s Day,” says NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. “The holiday falls on a Saturday this year, so Americans will have more time to splurge a little as they get together with friends and loved ones for a day of festivities.”

Bakeries have been preparing for the big day with themed treats. It is one of the more festive holidays, with striking green colors and distinct symbols such as shamrocks, leprechauns, and pots of gold.
