A recently-opened bakery in Wiscasset, Maine is going above and beyond to combat Alzheimer’s disease.

Italian baked goods specialist Mammy’s Bakery donates 10 percent all of its proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, whose mission is to provide optimal care and services to individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses and to their families and caregivers.

“We try to bring awareness to the foundation and the disease one cupcake at a time,” says Mammy’s Bakery owner Jessica Deshiro. Deshiro’s bakery is named after her grandmother, Mary Lou, who she calls Mammy. Mammy suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, so the cause is personal to Deshiro.

“We will one day find a cure even if it’s one cupcake at a time,” she says.

The bakery currently doesn’t have a storefront, but it accepts custom orders and sells its goods at certain retailers in town. It specializes in whoopie pies, in flavors such as pumpkin with maple cream cheese filling and gingerbread with lemon cream cheese filling. It is also known for its Italian breads and cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and cakes.
