Cannon’s Bakery in Newark, Delaware will give customers all the éclairs they can handle on National Bakery Day, provided they’re willing to eat them all in a short amount of time.

On Thursday, September 28, the bakery will hold a 1-pound éclair eating contest to celebrate National Bakery Day. The winner of the contest will be crowned the bakery’s éclair eating champion for the year and win a mouthful of a prize: free cake for a year.

Each éclair that Cannon’s Bakery makes is roughly 5 inches long, and normally costs $4 each.  They are made with pâte à choux and filled with Bavarian cream. The calorie intake on the éclairs is large as well, with each pastry containing over 1,000 calories.

The contest is open to all ages, but a limited number of slots are available.

During National Bakery Day, Cannon’s Bakery will have free samples, a chocolate dipping station, special prices on cupcakes, a kids decorating station, and demonstrations. The bakery will have extended hours from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST that day.

“Big box stores are opening up on every corner, increasing competition for independent bakeries like us. This event helps promote the quality, freshness, and custom abilities independent bakers can provide you with while still staying within your budget,” Cannon’s owner Brandon Byerly says of National Bakery Day.
