With National Bakery Day fast approaching, independent retail bakeries across the country are coming up with special ways to promote the event. One of the more unique approaches comes out of Cold Spring, Minnesota. There, Cold Spring Bakery has been advertising for the big day with a series of digital billboards.

Every week in September, the bakery has promoted National Bakery Day with a different billboard. The first week, it was a picture of one of its managers decorating cookies. The second week featured a picture of a baker baking bread. The third week featured a picture of a cake decorator doing decorated cupcakes. Finally, the week of National Bakery Day will feature co-owner Dale Schurman frying donuts.

Each week, the billboard has tied into a special running at the bakery. Additionally, Cold Spring Bakery ran ads on a local radio station that corresponded to each billboard. For a more personal touch, salespeople at the bakery have been wearing special National Bakery Day buttons all during the month of September.

On National Bakery Day, Cold Spring Bakery will give out free tote bags with the bakery's name on them to the first 100 customers at each location. From 1-3 p.m. CT that afternoon, the bakery will offer free cake and coffee for customers.

Cold Spring Bakery was started in 1946 by Mel and Floss Schurman. Today, the second generation of Schurmans run the bakery. Dan, Lynn, and Brian Schurman share ownership and managerial duties, and the bakery currently employs about 60 people.
