Recently, B. Doughnut in Washington, D.C.’s Union Market has gained fame for a special item it serves. The bakery’s Everything Bagel donut takes what people love about the popular bagel product and adds it to a sweet donut.

In it, yeast-leavened dough is filled with whipped cream cheese that includes either chives, bacon, or lox (brined salmon). It is then sprinkled with the Everything Bagel spice blend. The recipe is inspired by malasadas, Portuguese-style donuts for which B. Doughnut is also known.

On its website, B. Doughnut insists that founders Brian and Pin Chanthapanya pioneered the Everything Bagel donut while running their Baltimore location which eventually moved to Virginia (although they add the qualifier that some will contest the assertion).

B. Doughnut is not the only D.C.-area supplier of this signature item, however. District Doughnut has also been providing this savory donut for some time. The three-year-old donut shop was voted best donut shop by Washington City Paper readers the past two years, thanks in part to its Everything Bagel donut.

Regardless of who started it, it looks like this may be a trend that not only takes over the Northeast, but eventually other areas of the country as well.
