Social media can be a good indicator of the popularity of any given subject, and that goes especially for food. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media sites are full of posts about a wide range of culinary subjects.

The independent website Fitness Goals recently conducted a study to find the “Sweetest and Sweatiest” states or territories in the U.S. Their goal was to find out how dessert consumption compares to gym consumption in any particular area.

In order to acquire this information, the website studied Instagram to find out how many Instagram posts were made using the hashtag #Dessert during the short time frame of July 08, 2016, to August 29, 2016. The states/territories were then ranked based on the number of posts per 100,000 residents. While the top two results coming in, Washington, D.C. and New York, are unsurprising due to sheer size of populations and seemingly endless supply of sweets, the rankings after that are quite interesting.

According to fitnessgoals.com, here are the leaders in dessert hashtagging:

  1. Washington, D.C.
  2. New York
  3. Nevada
  4. New Jersey
  5. Maine
  6. Florida
  7. Virginia
  8. Connecticut
  9. Rhode Island
  10. Nebraska

As you can see, a majority of the Top Ten is comprised of states/areas on the eastern side of the United States. Nevada, the only one from the western half of the country, is a surprising entry at number three; however, the state is certainly home to a fair share of high quality bakeries.

Many of these states ranked highly in the fitness, or #Gym, category as well. Perhaps some of that can be explained by those who stay fit to offset their dessert habits.

Regardless of the reasoning behind why states ranked so high in #Dessert, this study shows us that it pays to be a bakery or sweet shop in one or more of these locations.
