Who knew that baking and decorating cakes could be so inspirational, and so perfect for national television? Cable television producers continue to release new movies and TV series that put the spotlight on the bakery business, and more specifically cakes.

The UP original movie Apple Mortgage Cake, the inspiring true story of Angela Logan who when faced with foreclosure, set a goal to bake 100 cakes in 10 days to save her home. Starring four-time NAACP Image award winner Kimberly Elise (Diary of a Mad Black Woman) and produced by Entertainment One, Apple Mortgage Cake premiered on UP in 2014.

A 5-year-old Angela Logan (Millie Davis) is in her grandmother Nellie's kitchen in New Jersey, learning how to make apple cake and discovering the joys of baking. Nellie tells Angela: "Cake makes people happy. One bowl, one mixer, and the right company, and you're set free for life."

Thirty-five years later, Angela (Kimberly Elise) is a single, working mom with three teenage boys. She juggles various jobs and helps with employment counseling at the local mission. While thrilled to be in the family home where she learned to bake, the house is falling apart, with sections deemed uninhabitable by inspectors after storm and flood damage. Plus, the car just decided not to start, and the boys all still need shoes, books and food. She has always made due until now, when her lender calls in the mortgage loan and puts her into foreclosure. Angela has 10 days to come up with $4,000 or she loses her home.

This is the true story of a woman who decides to bake 100 apple cakes and sell them at $40 each in order to save her home, and how this idea completely changes her and her family. As word of her "bake sale" ripples out through neighbors, friends, her church and even old flames, the story soon spreads to the news, locally, nationally and internationally. Orders fly in from all over the world. Angela is taken off guard by the overwhelming support. But soon, this fiercely independent woman learns to depend on the kindness and love of others that comes her way, particularly when the community and local businesses rally around Angela to help her finish and ship the initial stacks of orders.

"Apple Mortgage Cake is the inspirational, real-life story about how one good idea ? and a ton of apples, sugar, flour and butter ? can change a family's future for the better," says Barbara Fisher, senior vice president of original programming for UP. "We are thrilled to introduce viewers to Angela Logan and her family, who went from foreclosure to overnight success and her own prosperous apple cake bakery in Teaneck, New Jersey."

Bakery Boss
Buddy Valastro of Carlo’s Bake Shop in Hoboken, NJ, is starring in a new TLC show on the heels of his successful Cake Boss series.

America’s sugar high continues with the new TLC show Bakery Boss, finding Valastro seeking out a struggling family bakery to help transform into a dough-making success. In the one-hour debut, Valastro traveled to Frankfort, NY, to visit Friendly Bake Shop, an Italian-American bakery run by three generations of the Viti family. Open for 52 years, the business is suffering from outdated processes, broken equipment, and an old-school philosophy on running a small-town business.

At the center of the hopeful revamp is Tony, who left a successful career in Kentucky to return home to the family business after his father was diagnosed with cancer. Now, along with his dad, uncles, aunt, and cousins, they are determined to bring the bakery out of the 1970s and re-establish it as a business that can be passed down for even more generations.

Valastro brings his world-famous blend of business skills and baking expertise to work with this family and challenge them to make big changes all in an effort to transform their crumbling dream into a dough-making enterprise.

Bakery Boss and Cake Boss are both produced for TLC by High Noon Entertainment.

The hit TLC series Cake Boss stars Valastro, his family, and entire crew tackling more of the bakery challenges that have made the series a global phenomenon.
