The world is full of unconventional ways to add texture to cakes. Some of the best texture tools might not be found at the craft store...or they might not even be intended for cakes - or texture - at all.

At this year's National Capital Area Cake Show, many of the top decorators shared some of their secrets for adding texture to cakes.

Bob Broughm, who competed in the celebrity decorator's challenge, "Castles of the Silver Screen," used a tool used for refinishing wood floors to give his fondant wood floor (for his Edward Scissorhands cake) a realistic look.

In the "Fruits of the Season" live challenge, Ashlee Trotter used a dish scrubber to texturize her Fall wedding cake.

In her session on how to sculpt a waffle-and-syrup-bottle cake, Lauren Kitchens showed students how a crumpled piece of wax paper makes for creating the perfect waffle texture.
