King Arthur Flour promoted Robert S. Smith, this month to director of sales, bakery flour sales (BFS). Smith was previously the BFS senior sales representative in the South, a position he held since 2000.

“Robert’s years of experience as a bakery owner, a Certified Master Baker, and over ten years of experience with King Arthur Flour make him a perfect fit as our director of bakery flour sales,” says Michael Bittel, King Arthur Flour senior vice president and general manager of flour.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Carolina. His involvement in the baking industry began during the 1970s, when he took a job at his father-in-law’s retail bakery in South Carolina and went on to own that bakery for more than 20 years. The bakery made everything from doughnuts to wedding cakes.

In 1990 he sold the bakery and began working with Dawn Food Products for 13 years as a sales manager and training coordinator. In search of a job that would make better use of his extensive bakery training and experience, Robert was drawn to King Arthur Flour because of the top-quality products and service the company offers its customers.

“It’s great never having to apologize for the quality of the product,” Robert says.

Smith serves as the Director Emeritus and has served as Treasurer of the Southeastern Retail Bakers Association, and is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Retail Bakers of America. In 2012 he was inducted into the Retail Bakers of America Class of Emeritus Members. Smith lives with his wife, Peggy, in Columbia, South Carolina.
