Global Golden Spark Inc., Farmingdale, NY, is innovating the bread aisle with its artisan BreadKone. The cone-shaped product features a hollowed-out center that can be filled with a variety of foods, from dessert fillings to meats and salads.

Coming back from a trip to Prague, co-founders and engineers Pantazis Choulis and Eleftherios Spartalis were inspired to create BreadKone by Kürtőskalács, otherwise known as a chimney cake. A traditional Hungarian pastry, chimney cakes are often served at festivals and are made with a sweet, yeasted dough and have a hollow, cylindrical shape. After baking, they’re coated in sugar, cinnamon or other toppings like nuts, almond flakes or cocoa powder. Choulis and Spartalis asked themselves if they could create a savory version of the chimney cake.

“From there, we envisioned a handheld cone-shaped bread that could hold a full meal inside — something practical, delicious and entirely new,” Spartalis said. “We realized there was nothing like it in the global market.”

What truly propelled the idea was the challenge itself. The gap in the industry for a savory, conical bread and the technology to produce it encouraged Choulis and Spartalis to think outside the bread box.

The pair used Choulis’ grandfather’s recipe and began making the conical shapes by hand for their restaurant in Rhodes, Greece. In 2018, they opened two more restaurants in Athens. The pandemic spurred them to design a machine and secure a patent so the BreadKone could be produced industrially, which they began doing in 2022. Choulis and Spartalis partnered with Americans who discovered the BreadKone on vacation to bring the product to the United States.

Ideal for on-the-go consumers, BreadKone caters to today’s fast-paced world with its one-handed design and ability to hold a variety of fillings.

The cone features clean label ingredients, no preservatives or additives. They are made with ingredients including tarragon, Greek saffron, cardamom and green apple sourdough.

BreadKone has several varieties, including savory and sweet flavors. The savory line includes Classic, Sesame & Herbs, Everything Seasoning and Parmesan Cheese, while the sweet line features Classic Sweet and Cocoa flavors.

The savory offerings — with a suggested retail price of $1.49 per piece — can remain fresh for up to eight days at room temperature, and the sweet offerings — with a suggested retail price of $1.69 per piece — can last for 25 days at room temperature.

BreadKones can be purchased at breadkone.com or at select retail and foodservice partners in New York City, Texas, Nevada and California.
