Most people know about the iconic New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in New York City’s Times Square, but an even more unique version of this exists in a small suburb of Cleveland.

The village of Chagrin Falls, Ohio is home to a tradition for 13 years now involving its popular tourist attraction, The Popcorn Shop. The small business is once again hosting its New Year’s Eve Popcorn Ball in the village’s triangle park. Festivities will begin at the Township Hall at 10:30 pm with hot chocolate, cookies, live music, Hawaiian leis and glow sticks.

The main event is a giant popcorn ball, named Jupiter, due to its enormous size, which began as a sixty-pound edible ball in 2012. It previously made national news when it was stolen but returned. The current Jupiter, now six feet wide and weighing 230 pounds, is on constant display in front of The Popcorn Shop until the drop.

“This has become quite a unique annual spectacle and event for this unique village,” says Dewey Forward, owner of The Popcorn Shop. “We now have dozens of volunteers, who call ourselves the Merry Pranksters, working together to launch this fun and wacky new year event.”

At midnight, 400 popcorn balls will be launched into the crowd, which will be celebrating with live music and dancing.

Chagrin Falls is not only famous for its Popcorn Ball Drop, but also for being a one-time residence of President James Garfield. It was also the childhood home of Bill Watterson, creator of the legendary Calvin and Hobbes comic strip, and Doug Kenney, founder of National Lampoon and writer of Animal House and Caddyshack.
