Rising to the challenge

Juan and Alma Maravilla reflect on their numeous blessings for many reasons. Their business, Maravilla’s Bakery, continues to grow in Salem, Oregon, weathering the ups and downs of business cycles and especially factors outside of their control such as the recent Covid pandemic. In the aftermath, staffing remains one of their biggest challenges. Many workers did not want to come back to work after Covid. And commodity prices went up after the pandemic. “I was afraid we might not be able to keep up,” Alma recalls, points out that eggs, milk, sugar, and flour all witnessed severe price hikes.

But having a consistent and reliable bakery supplier in BakeMark helps the bakery immensely, the bakery owners agree.

“To keep our customers coming back is important to us,” Alma says with pride. “Time is also important. For me, it is important to recognize all that we have been through and how special what we have now is to our local community.”

Today, the business is flourishing again, thanks to a wider variety of flavors and choices, including an expanded beverage business and an expanded donut program.

“We are both very proud of our parents,” says their son, Mauricio, and daughter, Paola. “What they are experiencing now is the challenge to bring back positive memories for our customers – our extended family.”
