Detroit, Michigan is set to have its first vegan bakery, courtesy of Estella’s Vegan Dessert Boutique. The bakery, founded by Chantele Jones, is a Black-owned business that will debut in October 2021.

Jones, who owns a degree in culinary arts, named the bakery after her grandmother, who taught her how to make her first pie. According to VegNews, Estella’s will offer traditional Southern baked goods including pound cake, sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, banana pudding and pecan pie, all using local and seasonal produce.

After dealing with personal health issues, Jones incorporated plant-based foods into her diet. She started cooking vegan dishes for herself and her family, and eventually decided to take her new culinary skills outside her household. Jones started with catering, group cooking classes and plant-based pop-ups, but will now bring a brick-and-mortar business to Detroit.

Jones says that her goal is to dispel myths that following a vegan diet is expensive, complicated and flavorless.
