The coronavirus pandemic has already put the brakes on many planned celebrations this year, and that will continue through the 2020 holiday season. For those gatherings that will take place in November, December and beyond, social distancing and cleanliness will be major priorities.
According to a survey from Chicory, a New York-based tech firm, those in charge of food preparation for holiday meals will take the coronavirus and food safety into consideration, which means offering more pies for dessert that are served with utensils instead of finger foods served by hand.
“They are not going to be using their hands to serve food,” says Shanna Zhou, public relations manager at Chicory.
Bakeries have an opportunity to provide solutions for people who will seek easy meal replacements for safe handling and serving practices, according to Chicory.
As far as pies consumers will choose, pumpkin, apple and warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg should be popular. Pumpkin pie spice in particular continues to grow in popularity. According to McCormick, it saw a 218% increase in US menu mentions between 2010 and 2020 and a 207% increase in food and drink retail product names between 2010 and 2019.
Across the country, many bakeries specializing in pies will be busy this holiday season. Customers are looking to make sure the pie portion of celebrations is covered, and this fall, Goldbelly features a variety of iconic pies from all over the US. To achieve the pie’s signature height, each apple is hand-peeled and hand-placed in the pie.
