To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Yelp’s data science team looked into search data to discover what flavors people are enjoying this fall. To gather this data, they looked at searches in the restaurant and food categories during the week of September 21, 2020 and compared it to the week of September 21, 2019 to determine the year-over-year relative change in search share.
Unsurprisingly, pumpkin and pumpkin spice continue to dominate fall flavors. Pumpkin spice lattes (up 72%), pumpkin pie (up 66%) and pumpkin cheesecake (up 242%) are helping people get their pumpkin fix. Other popular flavors and dishes right now include brown sugar boba (up 200%), apple cider donuts (up 117%) and mochi (up 96%).
Another popular dish poised to be on everyone’s plates this fall is suadero tacos, recently the subject of an episode of Netflix’s Taco Chronicles. They have seen a 6,218% increase since the same period last year. Suadero, in Mexican cuisine, is a thin cut of beef from the brisket.
“At Yelp, we’re seeing people return to the comforting flavors of apple, brown sugar and pumpkin this fall, opting to enjoy the flavors in their favorite drinks and desserts, ” says Tara Lewis, Yelp trend expert. “Whether they’re dining in or out, people are also eager to try suadero tacos, a delicious beef taco, making waves this season.”
