Hobart announced Mary’s Cakes and Pastries of Northport, Ala., as the first-prize winner of its national Get Back to Scratch Signature Scratch Item contest, taking home a 60-quart Hobart Legacy® Mixer. Mary’s Cakes and Pastries’ decorated shortbread cookies received the highest number of votes out of more than 450 signature items from professional chefs and bakers across the country.

Sugar Tooth Bakery of Austin, Texas, and Danish Delight Bakery of Alpharetta, Ga., were named the second- and third-place winners, respectively.

The Get Back to Scratch Signature Scratch Item contest included bakers, restaurateurs, grocers and other foodservice professionals who competed for a chance to win one of three Hobart mixers. More than 100,000 online votes were cast during the three-month contest.

“Congratulations to Mary’s Cakes and Pastries’ decorated shortbread cookies! We hope the bakery enjoys its hard-earned Hobart Legacy Mixer,” said Jenni Bair, segment marketing manager, Hobart. “We applaud all scratch bakers and chefs for their passion and are excited to watch the Get Back to Scratch movement continue to grow.”

To enter the contest, contestants described their signature scratch-made item. Voters cast one vote per day for their favorite scratch-made item at www.GetBacktoScratch.com from May 21 through August 21, 2011.

“Winning aside, we could not have imagined before this contest that people we barely know would embrace our dream of a new mixer. We’re so grateful to the thousands of individuals who voted diligently and to Get Back to Scratch for this opportunity to grow our business in new ways and connect with our customers,” said Mary Cesar, owner, Mary’s Cakes and Pastries. “We are so excited to see what the future holds, but for now we can’t wait to get our Hobart Legacy Mixer up and running in the bakery!”

Sugar Tooth Bakery, a vegan bakery, placed second in the contest with its “Tiny Piney” pineapple upside-down cake. Danish Delight Bakery was named the third-prize winner, for its  Almond Kringle Danish pastry. The bakeries are going to be awarded a 12-quart Hobart Legacy Mixer and a 5-quart Hobart Mixer, respectively.

The Get Back to Scratch movement plans to continue to provide valuable resources to its members through blog content, scratch profiles and additional initiatives and programs while expanding its directory of scratch establishments across the country.
