For the second year in a row, spending for Independence Day will be down. With the holiday once again falling near the middle of the week, fewer Americans will be free to celebrate and thus food spending will be under $7 billion again.

86 percent of Americans plan to celebrate Independence Day this year, spending a total $6.7 billion on food items. This is according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics. The survey was conducted on June 2-June 12, 2019 with a field of 7,553 consumers.

61 percent of consumers plan to spend money on food for cookouts, barbeques, and picnics. $73.33 is the planned spending per consumer on food items for July 4th.

Other sources of spending during the holiday include fireworks, patriotic decorations and apparel, and travel.
