DoubleTree by Hilton will make history when its cookies are baked aboard the International Space Station. According to the hotel chain, its chocolate chip cookies will become the first food baked fresh in outer space, inside a prototype oven designed to make long-duration space travel more hospitable.

Launched at 9:59 a.m. EST on Saturday, November 2 from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, the brand’s cookie dough will be baked inside the prototype oven by astronauts in a historic scientific experiment. The spacecraft officially arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) at 4:10 a.m. EST on Monday, November 4 and was bolted into place on the station’s Earth-facing port.

DoubleTree by Hilton is partnering with Zero G Kitchen, which creates appliances for microgravity use in long-duration space flights, and NanoRacks, a leading provider of commercial access to space.

“Opening up the frontier of space means making it relatable to people’s everyday lives, and what could be more relatable than a freshly baked cookie?” says Ian Fichtenbaum, co-chef and co-founder, Zero G Kitchen. “When we first concepted the oven, we naturally thought of DoubleTree by Hilton and its signature Cookie. It is the perfect treat to bring a warm welcome to space.”

“Hilton has long been an industry innovator, and as we celebrate our 100th year, we’re excited to send our hospitality into orbit,” adds Shawn McAteer, senior vice president and global brand head, DoubleTree by Hilton. “The simple gesture of a warm cookie welcome is a favorite of DoubleTree guests around the world, and now we are sharing that moment of hospitality as part of this experiment aboard the International Space Station.”

After the baking experiment, the cookies will undergo additional testing back on Earth to assess the outcome. With the oven still in the testing stage, the astronauts aboard the ISS won't be able to enjoy these cookies, but they are being given an opportunity to enjoy special pre-baked DoubleTree chocolate chip cookies.

The chain has a special Cookies in Space website where fans can learn more about the project and purchase special DoubleTree Cookies in Space tin of cookies.
