Founded in 2011, Twist Bakery Café plans to open its second location in the Boston metro area with a grand opening celebration scheduled for May 28.

“Meet local officials, say hello to your neighbors, and enjoy of slice of cake (with fruit of course, after all it is breakfast time!) and a cup of our delicious coffee to celebrate,” the company announced.

The new bakery is located in the 3rd Avenue Shops in Burlington, Massachusetts. The original BakeHouse and Café is in Millis, Massachusetts.

Twist Bakery Café features such gluten-free favorites as their signature lemon squares, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, breads, rolls, macaroons and muffins, in addition to a full breakfast and lunch menu.

In 2018, Twist Bakery & Cafe won the title of “Best Gluten-Free Bakery” in USA Today’s 10Best readers’ choice poll.

Owner Kathryn Ernst recalls, prior to opening Twist, that when she was given a doctor’s recommendation to remove gluten from her diet, it was a troubling turn in her life because she loved breads and baked goods.

“Once I had determined removing gluten was a significant benefit to how I felt, there was no turning back. As many challenges as I’ve had because of my food limitations, I still considered myself a foodie: a scratch cook and baker selecting seasonal and clean ingredients to feed my family,” she writes. “I was simply not happy with the bread choices available to me only in the freezer sections. I became obsessed with finding a recipe that would produce bread I liked, and after a full year of playing mad scientist, I finally developed a recipe that worked. Once the bread and rolls worked, I moved on to some of our family’s favorite recipes, and the flour mix I had developed was successful in those recipes too.”
