Gritty, the Philadelphia Flyers’ new mascot, has been the talk of the sports world in recent months due to its unique look. It’s quickly developing icon status, which is why a local brewery is looking to honor it with a new beer.

Brewery ARS has introduced “Gritty Gruel,” a breakfast stout brewed with donuts and hopped with cold brew coffee. The donuts come from another Philadelphia icon, Federal Donuts. Cinnamon brown sugar and cookies and cream donuts are thrown in during the mash.

Following that, Rival Bros. Coffee's cold brew is mixed in during second fermentation. These inclusions are inspired by Gritty’s manic expression.

“[Gritty] looks like he/she is hopped up on something,” says Brewery ARS co-founder Sean Arsenault. “In all honesty, we have so many fans swing by the brewery before and after games that we are really doing it for them.”

Beginning Thursday, November 8, Gritty Gruel can be purchased in 4-packs for $17, as well as on draft at the Brewery ARS tasting room in South Philadelphia.
