On January 25, Whole Foods Market in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania opened a bakery within its store, making it one of only about 30 Whole Foods locations nationwide that bakes its own bread in-house.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the bakery produces eight varieties of bread from organic flour, as well as croissants, bagels, and Danish pastries. It is the only Whole Foods Market in the Pittsburgh area with a fully scratch bakery, making most of the bread on site, with a few breads being shipped in from Mediterra Bakehouse, an artisan bakery in Robinson, Pennsylvania.

Currently, the bakery produces about 150 loaves on weekdays and 400 on weekends, with the typical price per loaf ranging from $1.99 to $5.99.

Mediterra Bakehouse has been providing Whole Foods at 60 stores on the East Coast and as far west as Los Angeles and even Hawaii with breads since it opened in Robinson 14 years ago. One of its most popular bread varieties is its red fife bread, made with a heritage grain that was America's preferred bread flour in the 1800s but all but disappeared in the 20th century.
