Honolulu bakery specializes in poi malasadas

Kamehameha Bakery in Honolulu, Hawaii features several unique baked goods, including banana fritters and crispy bites flavored with haupia (a coconut milk pudding dessert), but its most popular item and the offering that is making the bakery quite famous is its poi malasadas.

Poi is a common dish on the Hawaiian islands. It is a starchy paste made from boiled and pounded taro root, and a powdered version added into the batter (as well as the glaze) is the key to the color and texture of these unique treats.

The bakery has some unique hours which means that customers must get there at 2 a.m. on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends to get the first batch of poi malasadas.
