Chicago’s favorite Cakegirls are back in business. In an Aug. 7 email blast, Cakegirls Ltd. announced they will be operating again soon, only this time under a different business model. Award-winning cake artists Mary and Brenda Maher sent out this message: “We’ve gone from making cakes to making cake makers. Products and party plans, hints and how-tos. It’s everything you need to DIY right, curated by Cakegirls.”

The email included a new address for the Chicago bakery at 2233 S. Throop St., Chicago, and a banner indicated the business would be online only. For more information, visit www.thecakegirls.com.

In March 2010, a fire destroyed Cakegirls, which had operated as an upscale cake shop in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. Sisters Mary and Brenda Maher launched Cakegirls in 2000. They have been featured on We TV's series "Amazing Wedding Cakes" and offered weekend cake design and decoration classes at their bakery.

Mary Maher is a former $50,000 winner of The Food Network's "Last Cake Standing" challenge in 2009. Customers of Cakegirls have included Bono, Queen Latifah, Ashlee Simpson and Jim Carrey, according to reports.
