And now for something really different…custom-designed wooden wedding cake toppers!

Heather Ward-Migner is the creator of Star House Folk wooden figurines. Although she started out making simple wooden toys, she quickly started getting requests for cake toppers, and they have become so popular that they are now her primary product.

These sustainable figurines, which are made of poplar, are made-to-order for each bride and groom. Ward-Migner requests a photograph of the couple—particularly one that shows height differences—and she then creates a custom topper done in her wooden interpretation. She finds much of her inspiration from nature and the natural world. “I am a fan of color and simplicity, so these are key foundations of my designs,” she says.

The toppers take about two weeks to create and have burned detail on the front and back. They are hand-pained and finished with bee’s wax and jojoba oil. They typically stand 4-5 ½ in. tall and are about 2-2 ½ in. wide. She can add a stump stand with the couple’s names and wedding date for an additional fee. “The great thing about my work is that it looks wonderful on top of a cake and then looks completely wonderful the next day on the shelf.”

Ward-Migner creates toppers for more than just wedding cakes. Any of her designs can be made as cake toppers with or without a hole for a candle. For more product and ordering information, visit Etsy, a shopping site for primarily hand-made products.
