SusieCakes expanding in California

One of the new favorite cake shops in Los Angeles is expanding across California. SusieCakes is closing in on six locations and is delighting customers with some of the most creative cakes around.

Owner Susan Sarich started it all in 2006 with her first SusieCakes location in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood. Her newest cake shop is set to open in San Francisco in late June, according to their website (susiecakesla.com).

A recent stop at the Manhattan Beach location of SusieCakes proved an adventure in creative cake classics. Susie’s Celebration Cake, for example, is a festive creation of six layers of vanilla cake with a rainbow of colorful sugar confetti and retro-blue vanilla frosting. Other flavors include the top-selling Susie’s Famous Southern Red Velvet, which is lightly flavored with cocoa, filled and topped with traditional cream cheese frosting.

Specialty layer cakes sell for $33 for a 6-inch cake, $46 for a 9-inch, and $5.50 per slice.

Other fun favorites are SusieCakes Whoopie Pies, Frosted Sugar Cookies, and their unique hand-stirred puddings that come in three flavors: banana & vanilla wafers, butterscotch or chocolate. A single bowl sells for $4.95, while a large bowl – enough to feed up to 10 people – sells for $24.95.

SusieCakes makes everything on site in small batches, using premium ingredients such as European-style butter, Scharffen Berger cocoa, Ghirardelli chocolate, and Guittard chocolate.

Porto’s Bakery puts the mousse on the loose

One local favorite is the Cappuccino Mousse, which features a layer of chocolate fudge cake, a layer of chocolate mousse, a layer of white sponge cake, and a layer of cappuccino mousse. The mousse cake is finished with a clear glaze and marbled with coffee extract. An 8-inch round sells for $23.

Other mousse cakes on the menu at Porto’s include the Chocolate Grand Marnier Mousse and the Chocolate Raspberry Mousse.
