Sugar artist Silverthorn of Michigan took home top honors from the 2011 Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show Grand National Wedding Cake Competition in Tulsa, OK earlier this month.

The competition, which drew in 83 participants in the Wedding Cake category, is one of the most prestigious of the year, as decorators come from across the country bringing cakes they have spent months creating. Show director Kerry Vincent says that Silverthorn is no stranger to the competition. "It was a popular win, and he is a popular guy. He is very invested in the sugar arts, and he is very talented," Vincent says in an interview with Tulsa World.

Coincidentally, the First Runner Up honor also went to a Michigan decorator, Pamela Tsaldari, who carpooled with Silverthorn to Tulsa for the competition.
