1.) What’s your earliest baking memory?
Baking a cake for my foods class in high school for our final exam. I didn’t realize how easy it was, and it sparked a love of baking from that day on.
2.) Name three baking tools you couldn’t live without:
Our 20-quart mixer; a good stiff spatula; and an ice cream scoop to scoop batter.
3.) If you could invite three people—dead or living—to eat breakfast in your bakery, whom would you choose?
My late grandfather; my brother who lives in California; and my grandmother who lives in Oregon. (Can you tell I miss my family?)
4.) If you had to eat one baked good every day for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? This is a tough on—sugar cookies with vanilla buttercream and sprinkles from Retro Bakery. They are thick, soft, slightly crunchy on the edges, and melt-in-your-mouth incredible.
5.) What is your favorite restaurant?
Sweet Tomatoes (aka Soup Plantation) It’s a soup/salad buffet restaurant where you can make your own creations. I’m a very picky eater.
6.) Tell us about the best meal you have eaten:
Any Thanksgiving dinner at home with my family.
7.) What is the best aspect of owning a bakery?
Creating my own flavors of cupcakes.
8.) The worst?
The hours. It’s all day, every day. Even when your kids are sick, even when you’re exhausted, even when you think you have nothing left, you have to go back in and open your bakery—or else you can’t pay your bills!

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BUTTERCREAM!
11.) What is your favorite baking trend of the past five years?
A return to the mom and pop bakery. People want to connect with their communities and bakeries have become a great place to do just that.
12.) Where do you find inspiration?
Everywhere! But especially the grocery store. I always look at new cereals, ice creams, and any candy in the candy aisles!
13.) What’s better—the icing or the cake?
I’m a frosting girl! (Hence—it’s all about the buttercream at Retro!)
